Nearly two years later my father fell ill with terminal brain cancer. The news was equally shocking. Here lies the difference. When I would share this news with friends and family it would be met with “Oh, I’m sorry. That’s really too bad. Hey, did you see the Leafs play the other night?!” The point was driven home that the “C” word was now as common as the common cold. We as a society have come to accept that Cancer exists everywhere and is simply a condition in life. There is no more shock value in it. It simply is. Everyone knows someone with it. Everyone accepts that it will and likely has already touched them. And so we are all very accepting of this.
Now here comes the year 2009. What will we remember most about the year 2009? Well the first thing that comes to my mind is the newest media buzz word “RECESSION!” Every where you turn, the focus is on what we don’t have and what we’re going to lose. Even the sitcoms and mini series on television are capitalizing on this popular theme. May I take a moment to remind each and every one of us what a dangerous pit this is to fall into?
It has been a long time since I stopped my morning newspaper ritual. My mornings always began with a piece of toast, a cup of tea and the morning paper. Wow. What a way to begin your day! Nourish your body while you read all about crime, drugs, death, poverty, starvation, crashing stock markets among other positive stories! Now if that wasn’t enough, I’d finish the day with the 11:00 news. You never know what may have happened since my first cup of tea in the morning!
The point that I am trying to make is that the Medias purpose is to sell papers and television advertising. This industry is as corrupt as the drug trade is. So many people are becoming “negative story junkies!” People spend hours a day scanning the papers and tabloids for unbelievable horror stories. Society is becoming numb to the goodness that is right in front of us in favor of the tragedies that are miles away. Why do we do that? Why do we get caught up in the doom and gloom of our failing economy? And what is it doing to us on a very personal level?
There is a saying I try to live my life by. “As you believe, so it is.” Do you believe you create your own reality or do you believe you are a victim of circumstance? Are you buying into the media frenzy each time you turn on the news? Are you struggling to stay in a positive frame of mind each day as you surround yourself with all this hype? Are your spirits lowered because you believe that this “Recession” is going to affect you adversely? Do you feed the frenzy by continually talking about it at lunch with your colleagues? I am reminded of one of my favorite quotes…
Within you right now is the power to do things you never dreamed possible. This power becomes available to you just as soon as you can change your beliefs.
- Dr. Maxwell Maltz
We really do hold the power to create the reality that we want for our lives. NO ONE, not even the media can take this power from us. I challenge you to turn off the news on your drive to work in the morning. Replace it with a few affirmations that will set a different more positive tone for your day. Try starting your affirmations with…
“I am so grateful that the universe is……”
I promise that you will approach your day in a more positive light. It’s a scientific truth that says positive energy attracts more positive energy. The same holds true for negative energy. You can rise above this all too common condition called “Recession.”
You can choose to tap into your own personal power and create the reality you want for every moment of your day. You can remove yourself from discussions with “dooms day junkies!” Change the topic and change the vibration! Change the vibration and change your life! Change your life and create the reality YOU want!
